This diverse Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba tour takes you from busy city life to the dense jungle and Lake Toba. You trek in the jungle of Mount Leuser Park where you can see orangutans in their natural habitat. Afterwards, you descend towards the river, raft back to Bukit Lawang and continue to Lake Toba. You have plenty of time to relax before you end this awesome 7-day excursion in Medan.
Day 1: Medan – Bukit Lawang
Upon arrival in Medan, you are welcomed by your guide and transferred to Bukit Lawang.
In Bukit Lawang, you check in at an eco-lodge. The rest of the day is free for leisure.
Overnight stay is at the eco-lodge.
Day 2: Jungle trek
After breakfast, you visit the Bahorok orangutan feeding platform. The area where the feeding platform is, is only a small part of the 1,094 square kilometers of Mount Leuser National Park.
Afterwards, you go on a 6-hour jungle hike to spot wildlife, while your guide explains you everything about Sumatra’s fauna and flora.
In the afternoon, you look for a suitable campsite to set up your tents.
You have to follow a strict code of non-contact with the orangutans. Getting too close to an orangutan increases the risk of passing on diseases and viral infections, which jeopardizes the semi-wild orangutan’s chances of survival and in turn the health and survival of the wild orangutan population in this area. You are asked to keep a distance of at least 10 meters and to move away if an orangutan approaches. Also remember not to leave any food or waste behind.
Overnight stay is in a tent in the jungle.
Day 3: Rafting
In the morning, you prepare for the rafting trip back to Bukit Lawang. This refreshing boat trip down Bohorok River is under the supervision of experienced guides.
Surrounded by jungle on both sides, it is likely you spot large family troupes of long-tail Macau monkeys having fun on the riverbanks.
You arrive in Bukit Lawang in the late afternoon, for a well-deserved shower and some much-needed refreshments.
You spend the night in the eco-lodge in Bukit Lawang.
Day 4: Bukit Lawang – Lake Toba
After breakfast, you go on an 8-hour drive to Lake Toba via Siantar.
You cross Lake Toba to Samosir Island, where you spend the night in Tuk-Tuk.
Day 5: Simanindo
Today you explore the island of Simanindo, experience a Batak traditional dance performance and visit the Batak Museum.
Afterwards, you travel to Buhit to see how they make the traditional Batak sarong.
In the afternoon, you visit the king’s residence in Ambarita before returning to the hotel.
Day 6: Lake Toba
Enjoy a relaxing day in and around Lake Toba.
Day 7: Lake Toba – Medan

We're a family with 3 children (16,13 and 11 years old) and made a fabulous 9-days tour in the north of Sumatra (Bukit Lawang, Tangkahan, Lake Toba) with Yetno, a warm wonderful guy and respectful guide! Yetno will do everything to make your travel great ! He's very service-oriented, incredible helpful and was always making sure we were okay. He was great company and shared his knowledge of the jungle and the animals we came across, including a number of close encounters with Orangutans - amazing! There's no doubt that the 2-day trek with a night spent in the jungle of Bukit Lawang and rafting back down the river was one of the highlights of our Sumatra trip. Washing the elephants in Tangkahan was quiet touristic, but our two youngest daughters really enjoyed the close contact with these huge animals. Tubing the river in Tangkahan was an amazing experience and one of the other highlights of Sumatra. We highly recommend Yetno as guide! Didier from Mundooz was also very helpful and flexible by organizing our trip. Excellent value for your money.

Bukit Lawang & Lake Toba tour 7D/6N
Wonderfull trip In Sumatra, well organised by Mundooz.
Great itinerary, well chosen guesthouses and hotels (even with swimming pool in Lake Toba!) and, above all, an absolutly fantastic sumatran guide, Kinol.
Kinol is a kind and experienced guide, full of knowledge who makes the difference with another adventure.
We where surprised to visit a really primitive land, with such a pristin jungle and miscellaneous and numerous fauna.
We could see from close 5 kinds of monkeys (longtails and pigtails macaques, Tomas leaf monkeys, gibbons and orang oetangs), monitors lizards, flying squirrels, birds,... An adventurous but safe trip, suitable for all kind of travellers because the guide follows your expectations and keep in mind your physical possibilities.
The night in the jungle (we asked for a tent, which can be provided) leaves a original and unexpected experience, with a shared breakfast with wild monkeys around the camp!
Many thanks to Mundooz and Kinol for this great trip in total fusion with the nature and the wild.
