Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City – Cu Chi Tunnels – Mekong
Around 8 am, you are picked up at your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City for a drive to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. These 200 km long underground tunnels were built by Viet Cong as a protection against their enemies during the French and Vietnam War, or American War as Vietnamese people say. The tunnels connect hideouts, shelters, fighting bunkers, kitchens, hospitals, schools and living rooms.
Upon arrival at the Cu Chi complex, your local guide takes you on a fascinating tour; you wander past huge bomb craters, discover many different types of bunkers, and venture into the tunnels for exploring the hidden entrances and wandering past tiny chimneys built in the ground for dispersing smoke from underground kitchens. You even get to taste some of the food local fighters survived on during the war.
Lunch is served at a riverside restaurant in Cu Chi, before driving to Cai Be in the Mekong Delta. You embark a vessel for a private sunset transfer along the many canals to your homestay on Binh Hoa Phuoc Island. Enjoy the people’s amazing hospitality and devour a delicious evening meal of local specialties.
Your accommodation for tonight is a simple camp bed in a dorm-style arrangement with bedding and mosquito nets provided. Toilet and bathroom facilities are shared and include a hot water shower.
Day 2: Mekong Delta (Cai Be – Ben Tre) – Ho Chi Minh City
Wake up early to the typical sounds of the Mekong Delta and hop on a boat to visit one of the Delta’s many floating markets, Cai Be. This bustling floating market is founded in the 19th-century and very characteristic for daily life in the Mekong Delta. Traders live on their boats and transport their goods to the market by boat.
Continue your boat ride along the numerous narrow waterways to explore more of the delta’s daily life. See and taste how families make popped rice, rice paper, coconut candy and many other local Vietnamese specialties.
Step in your private car when you arrive back in Cai Be for a quick transfer to Ben Tre where your guide takes you on a short walking tour through the fruit orchards. Hop on a “xe loi” or motorized rickshaw to ride through the green rice paddies before stopping at a charming garden house for a delicious lunch of local specialties, such as Elephant Ear fish and different Vietnamese vegetables and fruits served with tamarind dipping sauce.
After lunch, you have some time to relax before boarding a traditional sampan boat for a delightful cruise amongst the shady canals of the Mekong Delta.
Transfer back to Ho Chi Minh by mid afternoon.
