Itinerary

Day 1: Maumere/Ende – Moni

Day 2: Moni – Kelimutu – Bajawa

  • You get up at 4 am to watch the sunrise above Kelimutu three colored crater lakes. Kelimutu is a beautiful site and you probably haven’t seen anything like this before. Afterwards, you drive to Bajawa. You now enter the Lio’s ethnic region, visit Koanara village and learn more about local daily life.
  • Lunch is served at a local restaurant in Ende. You continue your drive to Bajawa with stops at Penggajawa’s blue stone beach, where you can see local women collecting stones to sell.
  • Accommodation and meals at the Happy 2 Hotel or the Bintang Wisata Hotel.

Day 3: Bajawa – Bena – Todolela

  • Early morning drive to the base of Mount Wawomuda for a 2-hour hike on the volcano and around its crater. Afterwards, you return to Bajawa for breakfast.
  • Lunch is served en route, before trekking down to the traditional Bena and Todolela villages, home of the Bajawa tribes. You also visit Luba and Bena, two megalithic villages where people honor their ancestral spirits in their daily life. This can be seen in their “Ngadhu” and “Bhaga”, conical thatched roof huts symbolizing their male and female ancestral spirits. You stop along the way on the slopes of Mount Inerie; a perfect opportunity for taking some amazing pictures.
  • Hike down to Todolela for dinner and overnight stay at a local house.

Day 4: Todolela – Gurusina – Malanage – Bajawa

  • After breakfast, you trek down to Gurusina village. Apart from water buffaloes, pigs and goats you might also spot vanilla, candle nut, cacao, white pepper, coffee and various other types of plants. You continue your hike to the Malanage hot spring to bath in the cool and/or hot water.
  • After lunch you drive back to Bajawa. Dinner and overnight stay at the Bintang Wisata Hotel.

Day 5: Bajawa – Ruteng

  • Today you continue overland to the charming small town of Ruteng. Lunch is served en route, and you stop at Aimere to witness the “arak” distillation and the fresh palm juice tapping. You also get to admire Ranamese Lake and the terraced rice fields around Mano.
  • Upon arrival in Ruteng, you first check in at Saint Maria Berduka Cita Guesthouse or the Marios Hotel. In the afternoon you visit Liang Bua, home of the “Homo Florensies”.

Day 6: Ruteng – Denge – Waerebo

The rainforest along the trek to Waerebo is one of Indonesia’s most important areas in terms of biology. This forest looks like a huge “garden of Eden” and the walk through the forest is a unique experience. The sound of various types of singing birds entertains you along the trip. The pristine river on the way up to the village offers a good spot for a rest.
  • In the village of Waerebo, you can see conical houses. The  “drum house”, with its unique architecture, is a place where they hold meetings, rituals and Sunday morning prayers. The drum house is a communal building for a clan, symbolizing the ideal unity of patrilineal descent.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at a traditional house in Waerebo.

Day 7: Waerebo – Denge – Labuan Bajo

  • After breakfast, you hike to Denge village before continuing to Labuan Bajo. On the way, you stop in Iteng/Narang, where you can enjoy the beautiful panorama of rice fields with lush and dry hills as a background and in Waeramu beach for swimming. Your lunch box is provided.

Prachtig

We saw all that was promised on the trip itinerary and one of the many highlights was Kelimutu, with its stunning different colors. Our visit to Pink Beach spoilt us with the best coral and fish we have seen on our travels so far - we didn't want to leave and nowhere else we have been since has had such beautiful coral or quantities of creatures. Of course the Komodo dragons were pretty exciting as well. All of these amazing natural sights were alternated by culture, such as Ruteng and other ethnic villages. I would do this trip all over again - thank you Mundooz!
