There is no better way to explore the Mekong Delta than by bike. Experience the beauty and the particular vibe of this remarkable region while cycling on shady canal paths through rice paddies and charming villages. This 4-day Mekong Delta cycling trip takes you from Ho Chi Minh City to Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Can Tho and Vinh Long and offers you the best of everything this part of Vietnam has to offer.
Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City – Ben Tre
Leave bustling Ho Chi Minh City by bus and cross the Mekong River on the delta’s longest bridge, straight to the gateway of the Mekong Delta; Ben Tre Province. Relax and have some local fruits during a 2-hour boat cruise on the narrow canals of the Mekong River, before hopping on your bicycle.
Today’s ride takes you through narrow paths in the shade of the palm forest to some challenging off-road sections. Be dazzled by the Mekong Delta’s countryside when following water canal paths and navigating through green rice paddies.
A welcome lunch is served at a local restaurant before cycling to your homestay in the afternoon.
Cycling distance: minimum 30 km, maximum 35 km
Day 2: Ben Tre – Tra Vinh
After breakfast, you explore more of the delta’s region by bike. Ride through the peaceful hamlets, with many cottage houses nestled amongst the orchards and farms. Visit the Dong Khoi Memorial Complex in Ben Tre City, which is established as a reminder of the Vietnam War. Continue your trip by crossing the narrow waterways on a local sampan before eating lunch in Ben Tre.
In the afternoon, you cycle along windy country roads towards a wide section of the Mekong River where a ferry boat takes you to the other side. From there it is only 4 more kilometers to your hotel in Tra Vinh.
Cycling distance: minimum 40 km, maximum 60 km
Day 3 : Tra Vinh – Can Tho
Charming Tra Vinh is known for its Khmer minority, interesting local architecture and many Khmer temples. Today your guide plans a custom tour, depending on your personal preferences and cycling skills.
Stock up for some extra energy at a cafe near Tra On’s market, before joining locals on a boat trip (1,5 hours) to Can Tho. This is the largest city in the region and considered the epicentre of the Mekong Delta. In Can Tho you will be welcomed in a charming homestay.
Cycling distance: minimum 40 km, maximum 70 km
Day 4 : Can Tho – Vinh Long – Ho Chi Minh City
Wake up early to the typical sounds of the delta and embark for a 1,5-hour boat trip to splendid Cai Rang floating market, which was established during the Nguyen Dynasty in the 19th-century and very typical of daily life in the Mekong Delta. Traders live on their boats and transport their goods to this floating market by boat. Continue your boat ride along the many narrow waterways to explore more of Can Tho and its remote surroundings. Take your time to experience an explosion of color and activity when visiting a rice mill and a rice paper workshop.
From Can Tho, you are transferred to Vinh Long, where you cycle 40 km from Binh Minh to Ba Ke with a lunch stop on the way.
Upon arrival in Ba Ke, your driver takes you back to Ho Chi Minh City and this will be the end of your Mekong Delta cycling trip.
