The Mentawai tribe, with an estimated population of 64000, is the only animist tribe in Sumatra. The Mentawai live in harmony and peace with the nature around them as they believe all things in nature have a spiritual essence. They live in longhouses, called uma, which is built on stilts. The walls are made by weaving bamboo strips together and thatching the roofs with grass.
The Mentawai tribe are the native people of the Mentawai Islands, in the province West Sumatra, Indonesia. Most of them live on the island of Siberut, which is about 100 miles from Padang, the capital of West Sumatra. Although the distance between the mainland and the Mentawai Islands is not great, nature contrived to keep this island chain isolated. As a result, the Mentawai people had very little contact with the outside world and remained one of the ‘purest’ indigenous societies in Indonesia until the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Mentawai are the last tribe to use the tribal technique of hand-tapping tattoo to decorate their bodies. They use sharpened sticks or animal bones to transfer the ink on their bodies.
