Description

This trek is a fantastic experience if you like mountains. Mount Rinjani is Indonesia’s second highest and most beautiful volcano and has a lot to offer. Climbing Mount Rinjani and camping on the crater rim with its beautiful sunset and sunrise is an experience you will never forget. I – one of the Mundooz owners – did this climb 20 years ago and it still feels like yesterday. For security reasons, this trip is not available from January until the end of March. Please note that you need to be fit and in good health for climbing Mount Rinjani.

Itinerary

Day 1: Senggigi – Sembalun (1,156 m) – Plawangan Sembalun (2,639 m)

You are picked up at 6 am at your hotel in the Senggigi area and driven to Sembalun. Upon arrival, you have breakfast while arranging final preparations. You leave around 9.30 am and start with a 2-hour walk to post 1. After a rest, you start your climb to post 3 around 1 pm where you have lunch before the day’s final climb to the rim of Plawangan Sembalun. Here you will set up camp and have dinner. You can enjoy a stunning view and a spectacular sunset on the rim.

Day 2: Plawangan Sembalun – the top ( 3.726m ) – lake – Plawangan Senaru

After a short night (you get up at 3 am…) you have a cup of coffee or tea before climbing to Rinjani’s summit at 3.726 meters ASL. You should arrive at the summit around 6 am, just in time to see the beautiful sunrise. You have an excellent view from the summit; you can see the whole island of Lombok and even Mount Tambora on Bali. After sunrise, you start descending again to your camp on the rim, where you have breakfast before descending towards the lake. You should arrive at the lake around 12 pm. There is a hot water spring close to the lake, where you can relax and loosen any tight muscles. The water from the hot water spring is believed to heal all kinds of diseases, such as rheuma and skin diseases. Lunch is served close to the lake and you can even try fishing if you want. Around 3 pm, you start your 2-hour journey towards Senaru Plawangan hill, where you set up camp, have dinner and gaze at yet another fascinating sunset.

Day 3: Plawangan Senaru – Senaru – Senggigi

After a well-deserved rest, you get up at 8 am for the last part of your Rinjani trekking adventure. After breakfast, you hike to Senaru for 5 to 6 hours. You have lunch at post 2. The last part of the trip is through tropical rain forest. In Senaru, cars are waiting for you to bring you back to Senggigi and drop you off at your hotel.

Trekking on the Mount Rinjani

We hiked the Mount Rinjani, an active vulcano and it was the highlight of our Bali-Lombok trip. It was almost easy for our kids (22 and 20 years old) except for the last steep part at the top because of the lavasand and moderate to difficult for the parents (52 and 53). Especially the second day were we got up at 2:00 am in the morning and needed almost 17 hours, arriving in total darkness. Luckily we had a very patient and professional guide, Dedi. Waheed was a wonderful cook and sub-guide for the kids who were getting impatience about our slow speed, so we split and they arrived in a decent time. The kids claim they have eaten the best food of their stay on the mountain. Our porters were great too. They even had taken a portable pottycabin, which was very useful as one of us suffered from Balibelly. Mundooz was very responsive and I would recommend this organisation. Try not to climb the mountain when it is holiday time in Indonesia as it is probably much nicer and cleaner to climb the vulcano with less people on it.

Best climb ever

For me personnaly, this was the hardest but also the best climb ever. Climbing Rinjani in 3D/2N is a challenge, but if you're in good health you should be able to do it. Never rush and listen to your body - slow but steady climbing and drink enough water. The morning view from Rinjani's peak is something you'll never forget, so enjoy every second of it.
