This trip takes you from Ninh Binh to Halong bay, definitely the “Vietnam must see” places in the northeast. Ninh Binh, both a province and a village, is situated South of Hanoi and often called “Halong Bay on land” because of its remarkable resemblance to the real Halong Bay. Ride your bicycle to the spectacular located Thai Vi Temple, embark on a traditional Sampan boat and hike between abundant rice fields and impressive mountains. On the way to Nam Dinh Coastal Province, you have the opportunity to admire the Co Le Pagoda. Visit a traditional clam farming area in Xuan Thuy Mangrove National Park along with a local fish market before cycling to the National Park’s Bird Garden.
In the second part of your Vietnam must see tour, a speedboat takes you from Hai Phong City to Cat Ba Island in Halong Bay, where you check in on a private wooden junk. Be prepared to go swimming, kayaking or just relaxing while admiring the amazing scenery from the top deck.
Day 1: Hanoi – Ninh Binh
No time to loose, as you head out for a 2,5-h drive to Ninh Binh Province. The morning starts with a bicycle ride to the cosy Thai Vi Temple, which is uniquely situated. On your ride back, you stop at a hidden hamlet tucked away in the magnificent grey mountains.
After your lunch, served at a local restaurant, you start off with a trek along Vietnam’s abundant rice fields and impressive limestone mountains. On the Thung Nang Jetty, you embark on a traditional Sampan boat that drops you off at the start of your hike. Walk through the isolated valley while making your way to the top of the mountain, meanwhile enjoying the diversity of local fauna and flora. At the top, take in the breathtaking views of the valley below and your surroundings.
After your hike downhill, you are transferred back to the hotel for dinner.
Day 2: Ninh Binh – Nam Dinh
After breakfast, you make your way to Nam Dinh Coastal Province. Stop and admire the Buddhist Co Le Pagoda, a mixture of both European Gothic and traditional Vietnamese architecture, along the way.
After check-in in at your homestay and having spent some time with the host family, a boat takes you through Xuan Thuy Mangrove National Park to a clam farming area. Enjoy your “al fresco” lunch in a stilted clam hut.
More fish in the afternoon, when you visit the local fish market located near the Coffer Dam. Learn how traditional fish sauce is made before you end your day with a bicycle ride to the National Park’s Bird Garden.
Dinner at the homestay.
Day 3: Nam Dinh – Cat Ba Island – Lan Ha & Halong Bay
An early wake up call by the host family’s rooster means saying goodbye and moving on to your next destination. After breakfast, you drive through the beautiful Red River Delta to Hai Phong City. From here, a speedboat takes you to Cat Ba Island where your enchanting Halong Bay visit starts.
Aboard a private wooden junk, lunch is served as you make your way to Lan Ha Bay.
In the afternoon, you get the chance to go swimming, kayaking or just taking in the surroundings while relaxing on the top deck.
Dinner and overnight stay on the boat.
